Guidelines for Authors

The National Apostolate for Inclusion Ministry (NAfIM) Quarterly E-Journal is the journal of the National Apostolate for Inclusion Ministry. The goals of NAfIM publications are to support persons with intellectual disabilities, autism and related developmental disabilities by:

  1. Promoting their basic dignity, and that of all peoples, as creatures of God, made in His image and likeness, and, through the Incarnation, Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, as adopted children of God with and heirs of heaven.
  2. Promoting their genuine inclusion and active participation of the life of the Church as well as their families, friends, supporters, advocates and service providers.
  3. Enhancing their personal growth and self-esteem.
  4. Drawing public attention to their spiritual, interpersonal and other contributions to church and society.

The NAfIM Quarterly E-Journal is read by persons associated with individuals with developmental disabilities including family members, religious educators, chaplains and service providers. The Quarterly E-Journal offers articles of enrichment, education and professional development.

The following list indicates the general categories of articles. However, the list is not exclusive.

  1. Inclusion in church and parish life: religious education, sacramental preparation and parish ministry.
  2. Inclusive education: public and private, elementary, secondary and college.
  3. Theology: theology of ministry with persons with disabilities on any category listed.
  4. Personal experience and inspiration: share stories.
  5. Housing: information about options for living arrangements.
  6. Ethics: scholarly treatment of the birth through life dilemmas associated with persons with mental retardation.
  7. Programs: examples of productive or successful projects or activities or an examination of the process.
  8. Education: stories or studies about educational opportunities and training.
  9. Health and mental hygiene.
  10. Person centered planning process: scholarly, practical or timely articles.
  11. Employment: information about options for paid or volunteer jobs or service.
  12. Professional development: education and training opportunities for service workers.
  13. Research: topics relevant to the above categories.
  14. Parent and family concerns: advocacy, support, etc.
  15. Regional reports: exchange ideas from different parts of the country.
  16. Spirituality: ways to tap into the spiritual core of people with intellectual/developmental disabilities

Length: Articles should range from 1000 to 3000 words. The style and vocabulary should be suitable for high school or college graduates. The NAfIM E-Journal is online so standards lengths and formatting found in printed journals may not apply.

Person First Terminology: Think “people first.” Write, “A woman who has an intellectual disability,” rather than “an intellectually disabled woman.” When the context makes it clear that one is referring to the target population, use descriptive terms such as "students" "children" or "resident" without the disability terms.

Photographs/Website Links/Graphs, etc… Authors can submit one photograph in jpg format. The editor can accept up to three (3) website links. One file, such as a graph, can also be accepted. It is the author’s responsibility to request a release for the photos.

Format: Manuscripts must be submitted electronically. They should include your name, affiliation if applicable, address, telephone number and e-mail address. A form with the needed information is attached. Please complete this form and return.

The editors of the Quarterly E-Journal reserve the right to refuse submissions of any article that does not comply with NAfIM’s standards. Further, the editorial committee reserves the right to edit submitted articles.

The Quarterly E-Journal will be published four times each year: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
